I wanted to share with you a new product that was created by a startup and that i tested last week. It is an app called “KARMA” available on GooglePlay and AppleStore. It is a digital platform for reducing food waste.Instead of throwing away food, Karma offers restaurants and grocery stores to sell their soon-to-be expiring food at discounted prices. You can buy food directly through the app and receives high quality food for less. Therefore, everybody wins and for us as students, it is a good opportunity to make some savings and at the same time get nice food from restaurants and cafes. There is more than 400 registered restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries and cafes.
It is all about timing and also geographic proximity.There is a map so it is easy to find food near you, or near the place where you’re going to.
You can find various type of food : meals,sweets,bread. Sometimes the price can be half of the original price or even less, so don’t miss this kind of opportunity. For your information, you can pay directly on the app. Also, you can follow your favorite places and get notified when there is food you can rescue. You have your own profile where you can see how much food you saved in total and how much C02 emissions you reduced.

I believe their idea is great since thay have managed to create a simple and innovative solution on one of the biggest environmental problems in the world which is food waste. I am very sensitive to this subjet since i am studying sustainable energy and environment and i have done many research on this subject. Globally we waste 1.3 bn tonnes of food every year of a value of 750 billion USD. In Sweden alone we throw away 500,000 tonnes of food per year.

What is Rappi?

In Mexico its diffusion started just some months before I came here, we had before this type of service with the supermarkets, but it was more the telephone calling system. I will show you some techniques that Rappi had used to gain more popularity.

Techniques of Rappi (The Latin-American way)

Growth Hacking

  • Growth Hacking is a technique that searches to raise the volume of the users, earnings and impact of the company with the minimum of possible resources. Rappi use their costumers as their main way of marketing. latin-americans tend more to trust the advices or the experience of a friend, instead of trying new things seen in an ad. So Rappi focus in the complete satisfaction of the customer. Adding value to their brand

  • Resultado de imagen de rappiRappi is searching constantly in the social media about the popularity of their brand and how the customers react to it. If it is memorable or if the customers really don’t care about the brand and they could actually use the same service but with another brand. In lationamerica they have leading us to a market world, where we start searching for a product and months later we really don’t care about the product, we have developed a fidelity to the brand and we start caring more about the brand. Our love to a brand sometimes reaches such a high level, that we start using the brand name, instead of the name of the product. For example: In Mexico we called the tissue papers “Kleenex”, because it’s the “best” brand. So when you ask in Mexico for a tissue paper, we will ask for a “Kleenex”, never for a “tissue paper”.

Catalogue

  • Rappi didn’t limit to only supermarkets, this start-up searched with many 24/7 stores (like pressbyran), coffee shops, some restaurants and some bakeries. Why this post?

#1 So the main reason of this was to contact Rappi, and give some feedback. A plus, was some suggestions of the european style that I like.

#2 The second reason was that I think someone in the classroom has a similar start-up, he wants to do, so he can use the experience of Rappi and may be even try out some of the Latin-American techniques.

Pushbullet is a cross-platform application that aims to connect multiple devices to create a shared user experience: with it you can share your phone’s notifications to your computers, share files/links/notes between devices, and answer messages on your phone from your computer.

Developed by a six-person startup, it’s been described as a life-changing application. It recently received $1.5 million in seed funding, and it’s expanding rapidly: at the moment is available both on desktop (as a browser extension or application) and mobile.

I tried using it with an Android smartphone and a Macbook: in this case it’s especially useful, because otherwise the communication between the two devices would be quite limited.

Automattic was recently listed by the Wall Street Journals as one of the world’s 73 most-valuable startups. Funded in 2005 by Matt Mullenweg, it is mostly known for being the driving force behind WordPress.

WordPress is not their only product, though. Among them, there is Simplenote, a note taking app that values simplicity. I have been using it for a some time now, and I think it’s worth trying.

The app is free to use and it’s available on multiple platforms: iOS, Android, Mac, Kindle. It’s also possible to use it from the web.

It comes with a lot of good features: instant synchronisation across different devices; tagging; revision history (to go back in time and never loose changes).
